So, with all that being said, here’s a third method for installing Linux: booting from a Live USB. The virtualization route is much safer-I’d even venture to say it’s 100% safe-but you’ll need a fairly mighty computer to run it at anything close to full speed ( forget about virtualizing on your netbook or aging Windows XP PC). But due to some of the complexities of how Wubi integrates into your system disk, there are still some risks to your Windows installation in the event of a crash. Dual-booting is the easiest method, after the initial setup, since it doesn’t require any bootable media. The two methods outlined by Dex definitely have their strengths. You can use your installation key or a special tiny one to startup (need to set your bios to boot on USB).Running Linux: Dual-boot vs. You make the installation WITHOUT INSTALLING CHIMERA on the HDD. You format the second partion at installation (with disk utility). Windows can boot normally without the USB key (not Osx obviously). My disk is MBR: first partition standard windows, second one Osx (HFS+ Journaled) and chamelon is not installed (if you install Chameleon, windows will fail to boot even from the menu given by USB key). I have in the back an tiny USB key (GPT scheme 1 partion with Chameleon and a copy of my /Extra directory) that is booting the system and I make the choice from the boot menu.
There is a turnaround that I am using on a similar machine. It is making impossible to have them on the same single boot disk. Windows cannot start if bootloader is not in the MBR.
